Scholarships in Norway for International Students

There are many universities in Norway that welcome international students and a wide range of scholarship opportunities are sponsored by either private organisations or universities in order to enable students who may be struggling to finance their studies.

Foreigners from outside of European Union/European Economic Area and Switzerland who are seeking degrees from any university in Norway normally pay tuition fees. But these fees are usually not that affordable for individuals from low income households.

Entry requirements for BSc/MSc Program

To obtain a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Norway you will have to be an exceptionally brilliant student as the admission to Norwegian Universities is highly competitive. BI Presidential Scholarship

This scholarship covers tuition fee for the entire duration of the program and it provides a stipend to cover the cost of living. The beneficiaries are Master of Science students with exceptional academic records, and that are enrolled in a Norwegian university. It is mandatory to have a grade of A on the ECTS scale or equivalent to apply for this scholarship. GMAT/GRE scores are also considered in the selection process.

The financial aid is mainly offered to the 3rd year MS students. The application process requiress you to submit a 1-page long essay on why you are qualified for the scholarship, covering all the essential points regarding your career plans and economic status.

Mobility Grant for Norewgian Language and Literature

The value of this grant is 5000 NOK per month, and it is specially designed for Master’s and PhD students who are dedicating their dissertation to Norwegian language and literature. This scholarship allows you to travel and study in Norway for 1-3 months for research purposes.

The grant covers your accommodation, travel and living expenses in the country. Recipients are strictly asked to use the grant for fieldwork in connection with a Norwegian higher institution of learning and with a Norwegian tutor. The eligibility criteria is that the applicant must be part of the department for Nordic/Scandinavian studies with an institution outside of Norway.

The ERASMUS+ Grant

This is one of the most popular scholarships available for students seeking to study in Norway as well as the entire Europe, and it is worth between 250 to 850 Euros per month.

As a beneficiary of this aid, you will have tuition fee waiver, and you will be exempted from paying fees for registration, examinations and access to laboratory and library facilities at the host university. Additionally it provides study and research grants and covers travelling expenses. The duration of the scholarship is 3 to 12 months for full-time courses and 2 to 12 months for training programs.

NTNU Scholarships

The NTNU scholarships offered by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology covers entire tuition fee of the course. The financial aid is specifically awarded to those studying at Master’s level.

However, it does not cover the cost of living for recipients. Part of the eligibility criteria is that you must have at least a grade of C in your bachelor’s degree. GMAT/GRE scores are also considered in the selection process.

NORAM Scholarship

The Norway-America Association popularly known as NORAM offers a scholarship to which specifically caters towards American students who are pursuing their post-graduate studies or research in Norway.

To be eligible for this scholarship, a candidate must be a full-time postgraduate student in a programme that is longer than three months. Every year, ten scholarships are usually awarded to select students based on their academic performance and financial need.

A. Wilhelmsen Foundation Scholarship Programme

The value of Wilhelmsen Foundation Scholarship Programme in Norway is 150 NOK per year. It is offered to all international students pursuing a Masters’s degree program at BI Norwegian Business School. As part of the application process, you will need to prepare a scholarship letter of not more than 1-page which must include your career goals, how you can contribute to the field of study and your family’s financial status. Other things that are also considered in the selection process apart from the letter, include your academic grades and previous experiences.

High North Fellowship Programme

The primary goal of creating the High North Fellowship Programme was established to support international students from countries such as Canada, Russia, South Korea, the US, and Japan interested in studying in Northern Norway.

For successful students, the scholarship will cover one or two semesters of study, and they will be required to stay in the country for a minimum of four months. The scholarship will also cover living expenses and applicants will receive a monthly stipend and travel grant of approximately 9,440 Norwegian krone.
